The Book of Henry is an innovative drama that both brings smiles and pulls on your heart strings. At first I thought this was going to be a child friendly family film, then the second act arrives and it just hits you. This is incredibly smart! I m... Read the full review »

The Shining is one of the most iconic psychological horror films of all time. Some even regard it as the scariest film of all time. Is it? It's definitely up there with the best. The plot involves a family looking after a hotel during the winter s... Read the full review »

Unfriended is a horror film entirely on Skype. Yes, we are viewing a MacBook as if we have remote accessed onto it where we have several friends in a group chat on Skype and some creepy stuff ensues. This is all because a girl commuted suicide and... Read the full review »

A Clockwork Orange is an extremely mature film about violence. It is often regarded as one of the most controversial films of all time due to its violent imagery, especially back in 1971. We follow the character of Alex who is an extremely violent... Read the full review »

Swiss Army Man might just be the weirdest film I've ever seen...and I've seen some weird ones. It's essentially about a suicidal man finding hope through a corpse. This isn't just any old corpse, this is a fart powered, spark inducing, karate chop... Read the full review »

2001: A Space Odyssey is ambiguous, minimalistic and quite frankly a masterpiece. Oh my word what did I just witness!? Can we all just take a moment and appreciate that this was conceived in 1968. 1968! We haven't had nearly enough decent films th... Read the full review »

Florence Foster Jenkins is the visualisation of following your dream, even if the consequences may hurt you. Straight away, the film tells you it's a true story so already you are hooked. I wanted to hate this film, I really did...but I loved it.... Read the full review »

The Void is an ambiguous, creepy, gore fuelled nightmare. Quite literally, it's as if the creators had a nightmare one night and decided "hmmm yes this would make a good film!". We've got grotesque creatures, a hellish endless hospital basement, t... Read the full review »

Lucy (2014)

Lucy (2014)

7 / 10
Lucy is...well, bonkers. I'm not too sure how to put my thoughts into a coherent review. I've seen this several times, and while yes it is very enjoyable, it's just absolutely crazy!? The first act is fine, Lucy has drugs in her stomach (for smugg... Read the full review »

Top Gun takes flying to a whole new level. I can't say I've seen many films about flying, or even aerial combat, so this is slightly new territory. Having said that, I thought this was a rather exhilarating flick! Tony Scott was a great director w... Read the full review »

We're The Millers is a road trip comedy that actually has great onscreen chemistry. If a comedy makes me laugh, it succeeds (I hardly laugh, I'm emotionless). I laughed twice, so it definitely succeeds. But what made this film work was the chemist... Read the full review »

Amelie is a French quirky character study and love story. I use the word quirky heavily because everything about this film is just full of quirks and idiosyncrasies. Our lead character, Amelie, bumbles along life with no cares or worries as she at... Read the full review »

Krampus is a horror comedy inspired by the folktale of Krampus himself. Essentially the opposite to Santa Claus but with the addition horns, chains and a flipping long tongue. So as I was watching this I thought "Yep, this looks like a typical Chr... Read the full review »

Mulan (1998)

Mulan (1998)

Mulan is an animated musical based on the old Chinese folk tale. The characters may have been changed for dramatic purposes, but the basis of the story is that a woman chooses to take her father's (who is getting old and frail) place in the army.... Read the full review »

Project X is insane. It's ridiculous. It's crazy. It's a damn fun watch. Let's get this straight, this film has a basic plot (if any) and is filmed like an MTV music video. I mean from a critical perspective this is not a good film. The acting is... Read the full review »

I, Robot is a robotics film that questions humanity. Although not the first to do so by any means, see Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence or the Japanese anime Ghost in the Shell, this was the most accessible film at the time of its release. It's... Read the full review »

What are some of your favorite indie films that others might not have heard of?

I love political thrillers, and Roman Polanski's 'The Ghost Writer' (or 'The Ghost' here in the UK) is one of the most overlooked in the genre. Highly recommend it. View the full reply »
