  • Unfriended is a horror film entirely on Skype. Yes, we are viewing a MacBook as if we have remote accessed onto it where we have several friends in a group chat on Skype and some creepy stuff ensues. This is all because a girl commuted suicide and so her ghost is now haunting them...by playing "never have I ever". Basic jump scares and horror traits aside, I actually found the Skype gimmick to be quite refreshing. I remember watching this for the first time on my MacBook and it definitely worked better than a TV. The characters themselves, although expendable and typical teenagers, I found them to be realistic...maybe because I'm young and have friends like these so they were relatable. The acting is pretty bland, nothing outstanding. The production values are of low budget, which is to be expected. As the plot unfolds, there were a few twists and turns such as who was actually responsible for posting the suicide video which did keep the short runtime interesting. I like a lot of the details like the different profile pictures for the different social applications, the Spotify account, the list of friends on Facebook...they were nice touches. I mean I was never bored but I do have some issues. As a computer programmer and someone who works with computer systems, the constant glitches with the webcams was just annoying and unrealistic. The inability to hang up someone on a Skype call was silly, even if it was a "ghost" user. Again, the inability to block someone on Facebook. This ghost must obviously be great at changing code, just saying. Our lead character, Blaire, is sooooo needy that it just irritates me. Oh and the ending was absolutely rubbish, any film that ends on a jump scare is just cheap. It's not cool and it's not clever. I love the gimmick and the relatable characters, but the film just wasn't scary and has one of the worst endings I've seen from a horror film.
