  • Mulan is an animated musical based on the old Chinese folk tale. The characters may have been changed for dramatic purposes, but the basis of the story is that a woman chooses to take her father's (who is getting old and frail) place in the army. The message is clear: a woman has the equal rights to do a man's job. There are themes of family, honour and love as well...just to ensure that this is a "proper" Disney animation. This is one of the strongest entries from the Disney Renaissance era, I am slightly biased as I love films based in ancient China. The songs are memorable and varied, particularly a personal favourite of mine: "Make A Man Out Of You". "Reflection" is also a solid song and is the mandatory sad song of the film. The characters are memorable, Mulan showcases independence whereas someone such as Mushu is there for the comic relief. A much needed comic relief may I add, Eddie Murphy was an excellent voice casting choice. He has the charisma, the personality and the high-pitched shouting and screaming that will make all audiences smile with glee. Some of the animal characters are forgettable such as Mulan's pet dog, there just wasn't enough screen time for them. We have ourselves a good villain that brings across a sinister agenda who just oozes evil. The animation is clean, crisp and vibrant (as one would expect). The love that grows between Mulan and General Shang was well developed and did not feel forced, which just highlights the fragility and humanity that Mulan has. The ancient Chinese setting is a first for Disney and I can see this as a more informative experience for younger audiences who are not used to their cultures, so that's a bonus. Mulan will always be a classic for me, it is close to Disney perfection. If only they removed some of the unwanted characters and focussed on our leads a little bit more, then it would be perfect.
