The Void is an ambiguous, creepy, gore fuelled nightmare. Quite literally, it's as if the creators had a nightmare one night and decided "hmmm yes this would make a good film!". We've got grotesque creatures, a hellish endless hospital basement, triangles of death (yeah, I'm calling it that) and what I can only describe as extraterrestrial deities. Actually I can't even describe that, it's all inferred...the film's ambiguity is rather, unfortunately, it's downfall. I literally cannot explain the third act of this film, I mean I can kind of understand it, but my description could be completely different to yours. Some might find that to be an intriguing thing, I for one found it too unappealing. I was completely on board during the first two acts, the plot was full of intrigue and there were actually a few moments of terror. The cultists with the triangles of death on their robes were creepy, the hellish creatures themselves were excellent crafted and obviously had masses of inspiration from John Carpenter's The Thing. The setting was ominous, the weird nightmarish hell scenes were full of suspense and I like the way there were sequences of astral visualisations...like nebulas or the cosmos. The directors actually did a good job, it's a well shot and executed film. Loved the scene where the police car's lights flashes on the cultists. The acting was serviceable, good to see Ellen Wong in another role. All this said though, when your characters are bland and expendable it makes it difficult to become invested. With the addition of an ambiguous plot and an extremely abrupt ending, I would find this difficult to recommend to your average moviegoer. Having said that, I was entranced and enjoyed the horror prosthetics...I would probably give this another watch soon, so that's my biggest compliment.
