WHAT I LIKED: I suppose the appeal of ‘Everybody Wants Some,’ is how real it feels, as all of the performances and a fairly good script successfully build a whole roster of characters that are as grounded as they are amusing.
WHAT I DIDN'T LI... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: This is real back to basics cinema brought into the modern age; an in-depth and slowly-built study of two well-developed character groups in plots wonderfully at odds with each other. Yes instead of mindless action and black and whit... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: Now I really enjoyed the first X-Men, and I didn't for a moment expect that they'd top it with X2... but boy did they; with Bryan Singer bringing everything a sequel should have and setting a bit of a comic-book gold standard along t... Read the full review »

What are some of your favorite movie soundtracks?
@TheFilmRascalShow I think there's been some good stuff in there; I'd recommend listening to Nocturnal Animals or Hell or High Water - they're both incredible. Some other favourites for me were High Rise, Magnificent 7 and X-Men Apocalypse!

WHAT I LIKED: Unlike his debut piece which was more concerned with context than character, Steve McQueen's 'Shame,' is a meticulous character-study that spends its entire run-time examining a man with a sex addiction and severe emotional detachmen... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: 'High Rise' is a film driven entirely by its themes, and it certainly succeeds on that front. Yes in fact this is easily one of the most interesting social commentaries I've seen in a long time, and I suppose that's mainly down to th... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: A crime-thriller with real depth; Ben Affleck's 'The Town' isn't just great edge-of-your-seat cops and robbers stuff, but its brilliant narrative genuinely allows you to understand both sides too. Indeed that's a rather rare thing in... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: This is yet another Liam Neeson-fronted thriller so we should have some idea of what we're getting by now, but the core asset of 'Non-Stop,' is undoubtedly the mystery and the way it builds tension so surprisingly well. Yes you genui... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: This amazing film takes the fight on a timely issue, and it wins because of its developed characterisation and its tragically poetic story. Yes 'Philadelphia,' genuinely brings a tear yo the eye and engages brilliantly with its touch... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: At its centre, 'Doctor Strange,' is really just another simple, well-told superhero origin about a guy going from douchebag to hero; it just so happens to have a heavy side-order of dazzling world-building and mysticism.
That's all... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: It makes a lot of sense that Kenneth Branagh agreed to direct Marvel's 'Thor.' Two brothers fight for the throne and the approval of their difficult father. Spurred on by his ever-manipulative brother, the arrogant heir does somethin... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: 'Iron Man 3' is the sequel that Iron Man 2 should have been, as it takes a similarly interesting character premise (this time Tony's PTSD after the events of The Avengers) and crucially takes it seriously.
Yes rather than turning the... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: Few films out there bring quite the sense of celebratory joy and excitement that The Avengers does, as it not only marks the first time that these characters that we'd grown to care for come together, but the way it's executed makes... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: On the one hand, ‘Man of Steel’ is a surprisingly delicate character study that spends an awful lot of time grounding the most realistic, human and relatable version of Superman we’ve ever seen on the big screen. This is largel... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: The final chapter of Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy is widely accepted as a miss-step by most, but quite frankly I'm of the opinion that it's the best of the three as it combines the touching character stuff of 'Begins,' and the ideas-h... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: Despite its crazy concepts and mad, spoofy originality, 'Kingsman: The Secret Service' is a film so comfortable in its own shoes that you'd be forgiven for mistaking Sofia Boutella's metal legs for slippers, but then I suppose that's... Read the full review »
