  • WHAT I LIKED: 'High Rise' is a film driven entirely by its themes, and it certainly succeeds on that front. Yes in fact this is easily one of the most interesting social commentaries I've seen in a long time, and I suppose that's mainly down to the source material, but also a great script and unsurprisingly interesting visual direction from the versatile Ben Wheatley.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: That's all well and good, but when you go this far to explore your ideas there's precious little to bring it home for the audience. As a result, whilst you watch in vague desperation and wonder, you also do so with a real sense of detachment. Sadly a fab score and Tom Hiddleston's excellent performance aren't quite enough to save that.
VERDICT: A thematic and stylistic idea that in the end feels a little wasted without any real connection with its audience, 'High Rise,' is an admirable and interesting failure.
