  • WHAT I LIKED: On the one hand, ‘Man of Steel’ is a surprisingly delicate character study that spends an awful lot of time grounding the most realistic, human and relatable version of Superman we’ve ever seen on the big screen. This is largely thanks to Cavill’s great performance, but it is also down to Snyder’s surprisingly sudden delicate hand and a great script that begins to delve into some deeper ideas with a level of nuance and panache that one would never have previously expected from Snyder.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Whilst that exploration does occasionally drag, once you’ve sat through one minute of the final act you’ll be longing to turn back the clock. Yes ladies and gentlemen, from half-way onwards the film is a mess of CGI, aliens and bizarre rubbish that entirely drowns out and disregards the great character work of before. With the madness comes a sudden loss of emotional resonance, realism and even any sort of basic sense which drives the whole last hour and a quarter into real destruction porn territory.
VERDICT: A surprisingly good film for the first hour, then pretty terrible after that; 'Man of Steel' establishes its characters well, but it does just as good a job of taking all that beauty away.
