"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" Review
What made the first 'Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)' so appealing - not only to superhero fans but also to movie-lovers across the world - was that underneath all that retro madness there was a wealth of genuinely charming characters and stories t... Read the full blog post »

WHAT I LIKED: A Sam Mendes directed Bond movie was always an exciting and intriguing prospect, but what he did with 'Skyfall,' was properly brilliant and exceeded everyone's expectations, and the final product actually amounts to a film that's not... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: When someone tells me that I don't like Hollywood rom-coms, to contradict them I either reference Richard Curtis, or Paul Feig and his work on this film. Yes 'Bridesmaids' is not only a properly funny and well-constructed romance/com... Read the full review »

Who is the best director working today?
Fincher is definitely up there for me - I'm a big fan of Sam Mendes' work too, and Nolan of course!!

WHAT I LIKED: It can at least be said for 'Iron Man 2' that they did choose an interesting direction for Tony Stark's character on paper, as seeing him struggle with his newfound responsibility and the mataphor of the suit literally poisoning him... Read the full review »

Films you don't like that everybody else loves.
@FILM I liked Argo but I agree, it's not as incredible as it was made out to be.
For me, The Shining, Sicario, Layer Cake, Everybody Wants Some, Hacksaw Ridge and even John Wick - despite their general acclaim - are all films that immediately spri... View the full reply »

WHAT I LIKED: The bottom line is that 'Lucy' is a film all about its themes, as it explores some great concepts really rather intricately, yet the beauty of it is that it does so with a fairly light touch. Yes thankfully Luc Besson doesn't take th... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: 'Prometheus' is without doubt the most ambitious film in the Alien series, as it properly delves into some very interesting themes and plants numerous seeds whilst advancing hugely in visual design too. It really feels like Ridley Sc... Read the full review »

Heading Underground: A Deeper Look at Skyfall and Spectre.
Sam Mendes, one of my favourite directors working today, is a man whose films generally pack a whole lot more than first meets the eye, and they consequently leave lots of room for... Read the full blog post »

WHAT I LIKED: Overall, 'Jack Reacher: Never go Back' is an enjoyable and satisfying sequel as it aims to deliver on the highs, and develop the lows of its fun predecessor. That's largely a success too, as some great new female characters (who set... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: Few films out there make me feel quite as good and down-right happy as '21 Jump Street' does, and for that it truly earns a spot right up there with my favourite comedies of all time. Seriously, the humour here is absolutely golden -... Read the full review »

WHAT I LIKED: In some moments, 'Prisoners' is one of the grittiest, most frightening psychological thrillers I've ever seen, as it hooks you and places you in one of the most desperate and difficult scenarios imaginable. What hooks you though is a... Read the full review »
