  • War Dogs is a smaller scale version of The Wolf of Wall Street. I literally couldn't get it out of my head whilst watching this, everything just seemed to imitate it. The freeze frames followed by narration, the clubbing scenes, the ludicrous actions that our characters make...like shooting a semi-automatic weapon in broad daylight. It's an entertaining watch and solidly crafted don't get me wrong, but it wasn't being its own thing...heck even the style wasn't original. This is based on the true story of two young guys procuring weapons and ammunition to sell to the US military. It's actually a known government initiative, except these guys exploit it to the maximum where it actually starts to become illegal. If everything here is true, then the whole scenario of repackaging the Chinese ammunition was genius. Absolutely ridiculous, but genius. As I said, it's a solidly crafted film and I honestly think Todd Phillips did a good job. Miles Teller is a rather underrated current actor and I thought he was charismatic. His naivety and innocence was the key into getting us involved, if the film was told through Jonah Hill's character's eyes then it would be a completely different viewpoint. So yes, Jonah Hill is in it and for those of you who know me know how much I dislike him...and I still do. He is just so "meh" and forcefully tries to be funny and witty...even the completely forced laugh in this was painfully annoying. Bradley Cooper was underused. The script was pretty decent and I liked how each chapter began with a quote from what is about to happen during the chapter. The smuggling through the "Triangle of Death" was exciting, nothing else after that was as enthralling (which is a shame as that scene is early on...). I never really bought into the chemistry between Teller and Hill and this is marketed as a light comedy...I didn't laugh once. I did smile at the "What does AEY stand for?" scene. That's it. I mean War Dogs is an ok film, I just couldn't get on board with it...it all felt too forced.
