Sausage Party (2016) is the animated adventure of Frank (Seth Rogen) the sausage, Brenda (Kristen Wiig ) the hot dog bun, Teresa Taco (Salma Hayek) and Sammy Bagel Jr. (Edward Norton) who are excited to go home with a happy customer. Soon their world comes crashing down as they learn the horrifying truth that they will eventually become a meal. After they learn their fate, the panicked perishables devise a plan to escape from their human enemies.
Sausage Party is one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. While it does have some big laughs, I found myself bored as I suffered through the constant stupidity and crude humor. The redeeming quality of this film is the amount of originality that went into the story and the excellent voice talent provided by the cast. I enjoyed the creativity that went into the characters and how well they matched the personalities to the food items. They also had a few creative and hilarious moments as the perishables traversed the Shopwell’s supermarket. Even with the inventive and amusing moments between the characters and the world they live in, the incessant cursing and stupid crude jokes got old after about 10 minutes.
My favorite character in the film was Barry, a slightly deformed sausage from Frank's pack who sees the horrors of the kitchen firsthand. I enjoyed how much of his story took place out in the real world and wasn't confined to the supermarket. The concept of the various foods interacting with each other inside the grocery store would have made an excellent short film but concept grew old pretty quick.
Sausage Party is an incredibly stupid film with an abundance of crude adult humor. If you like this kind of humor, I would recommend checking it out, but personally, I suffered through more bad jokes than I laughed at. The creativity and originality for the film would have been perfect for a short film, but the full feature length caused the humor and story to run dry. I give Sausage Party (2016) a 4 out of 10.
