The middling “Borrego” is a wannabe thriller that’s dull and lifeless. It’s slow and doesn’t have much substance story-wise, and it’s just another tale of a character who is in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Elly (Lucy Hale) is a young botanist who has traveled to a remote desert town to study invasive plant species. While out working in the field one evening, she witnesses a plane crash. Running over to help, Elly is shocked to see that it’s a drug mule who was at the controls, and he pulls out a gun and kidnaps her. She’s his only way back to safety, and the two wander through the unforgiving heat and landscape. Soon, the person expecting the drug delivery grows angry when his product never arrives, and he begins to track them down. It isn’t long before the story turns violent and deadly.
This is a conventional survivalist tale that wants to be so much more. The themes are current and interesting, but writer-director Jesse Harris squanders the chance to make any sort of bold or meaningful statement with a mediocre screenplay. The film suffers from amateurish acting and execution, and the pacing is slow. At least there is a sense of danger, and cinematographer Octavio Arias captures the vastness and desolation of the desert landscape.
In the end, “Borrego” is uninteresting and forgettable.
