If there’s one thing that hasn’t already been made abundantly clear from the events of this year (or perhaps the last four years), this upcoming election will be the literal fight for our lives as our democracy and potential freedom of speech are in massive jeopardy, all of which “All In: The Fight For Democracy” bookends and has been timed to precede. It’s less a documentary in a sense more than it is an emergency broadcast, tracing the lineage of voter suppression from the Civil War to the 2018 midterms—and sounds a very informative, loud and desperate warning siren for what may come this November.

The film's representation is primarily centered on Abrams and other activists and politicians of various backgrounds who support the fight against voter suppression and want to help all citizens vote, as it is their constitutionally protected right but the direction from Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés always steers back towards the present day to mirror the parallels between past and present. The famed and infamous “The past is never dead. It's not even past” quotation rings heavily throughout the entire documentary with slick, concrete and smooth cinematography and editing to back up it’s visual metaphors and schematic drawings while pouring its influences and themes on activism, empathy, integrity, and perseverance out on its sleeve. Bursting on the screen with a narrative that’s engaging, intensely relevant and impeccably credentialed not only highlights the bald faced high stakes level of corruption to the core at its fullest but also brings relevancy to Joker’s mentality: some men just want to watch the world burn. Whether or not anyone else believes this is their game. I wish I had more to say on the matter but it practically speaks for itself.

I was always the kind of person that wanted to stay clear of politics no matter the cost but now that our actual freedom of speech is being stripped away from us, it’s impossible for me to ignore now. This is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, the most important documentary to be released this year if not the most important FILM as of right now because so many people right now (including myself) are both pissed off and terrified of the notion that we are being censored and silenced for wanting the power of democracy. We need to fix this for our sakes and we can start with this upcoming election: double check, triple check every paper, crevice, whatever surface you have to to make sure you’re registered, vote early if you have to. Just—just do it.
