Terrence Malick's a Hidden Life is a tame and sobering epic about A man's journey to becoming a symbol against evil. The brilliance of the film lies in its deliberate and intense patience with it's main conflict, immersing the audience in the beauty of Radegund, while the consequences of Franz's conscientious objecting slowly begin to rear its ugly head. By the end of the picture, Franz is stripped of his humanity in order to be a symbol for protecting that same humanity - and the dichotomous relationship between the necessity of doing what's right, and its ultimately unsavory effects make the film both complex and heart-warming.
