  • Jack the Giant Slayer is a slight twist to the infamous fairy tale. Jack now kills Giants. Ok maybe not on purpose and it's not his job or anything, but still. I'll go ahead and say it, this film is fine...just fine. Too many drawbacks and bad decisions holds it back from being good. Firstly the supporting cast here is great, nice array of British actors and of course the beautiful Ewan McGregor (who's facial hair in this stole the show). The productions and costume design were excellent and the visuals for the most part were pretty high quality. The Giants however didn't look too good. The biggest problem is our two main leads...they are dull, uncharismatic and quite frankly wooden. You can't have a big budget fantasy movie and have boring leads, it just won't work. The script was tedious and the characters were thinly written. Obvious bad guy was obvious, obvious hero was obvious. Nothing new here, however it is watchable and if it was on again, I wouldn't turn it off. So I guess that's the highest compliment I can give it.
