  • The Resident has more thrills in a bathtub than with its predictable clichés. That poor bathtub, or should I say "damn I'm jealous...". Swank pleasures herself in murky water and then Morgan comes along and just whips his ding-a-ling out, gives it a tug and strokes the tub with such delicacy. I was waiting for Christopher Lee to jump in and have his turn! God damn. Anyway, not much to say about this disposable domestic thriller, other than I enjoyed it way more than I should've. A heart surgeon/nurse/no idea is looking for a room to rent in Brooklyn, in which she comes across a ridiculously inexpensive apartment thanks to a gentlemanly landlord. But why so cheap? Well, little did she know, that the apartment is surrounded by claustrophobic corridors and one-way mirrors that allowed the landlord to spy on her and...well, you can see where this is going. It's completely predictable and offers nothing new to the genre. Think he is a creep? You damn right he is. Think she is pretty stupid for a heart surgeon? Whole heartedly agree. The plot is stagnant, but there is something so assured about this thriller that makes it so...watchable. The claustrophobic environment, the passive aggressive stalking or perhaps the suave demeanour of Morgan. By the third act, you'll be jumping up and down screaming "go on! Effing run! Wait, hit him again! Yesss!". You strangely start becoming involved with these one-dimensional characters, as if director Jokinen was inserting Demerol into my beverage. A few technical aspects also elevated the environmental domestication. Good use of shadows, lighting was adequately dark and sound design was effortless during scenes of minimal noise. Even the narrative itself gave me a surprise halfway through where it suddenly rewinds time and plays again, but this time in Morgan's creepy perspective. Was a nice touch that suddenly held my interest. If you've seen other domestic thrillers, then nothing here will captivate you. It's a standard formula that relies too much on genre tropes to be memorable enough. Is that to say it's a bad film? No. Just a short stay is all.
