“The Penguin Lessons” is a heartwarming, witty, and occasionally heavy-handed mix of comedy and drama set against one of Argentina’s darkest periods. Loosely based on a true story, the film chronicles Tom Michell’s memoir of the same name.

British teacher Tom (Steve Coogan) lands a job at a prestigious boarding school in Buenos Aires in 1976. As political unrest brews outside the school gates, Tom remains blissfully detached until a military coup forces the school to close. Looking for an escape, he heads to Uruguay for a carefree weekend, where he stumbles upon an oil-drenched penguin dying on the beach. What starts as an impulsive act of kindness and rescue mission turns into the man smuggling the penguin back to Argentina. The two quickly develop a profound bond and become fast friends, although it’s clear that the creature needs to find a person who can provide better care.

For much of its runtime, the film thrives on its understated humor and Coogan’s impeccable comedic timing. His signature dry delivery bring a charm and warmth to the story that balances the lighthearted moments with the grim realities of a country in dire turmoil. The film never gets too silly nor slapstick, instead offering gentle laughs infused with sincerity. The interactions between Tom and his unlikely companion bring some of the film’s best moments, and it’s impossible not to be charmed by this tale of a human and his flightless seabird companion.

That’s why it’s so disappointing when the film takes a sharp turn into melodrama with the introduction of a kidnapping subplot. While this adds stakes to the narrative, it also feels a little forced and unnatural (especially when compared to the rest of the story). The result is a project that feels like it’s two different movies in one.

Despite some tonal shifts and an ending that tries too hard to pull at the heartstrings with its manufactured emotion, “The Penguin Lessons” is a well-crafted, entertaining film that blends history, humor, and heart. This is a touching story with a unique premise that’s anchored by Coogan’s natural charm and an unexpected but endearing animal sidekick.
