It definitely goes without saying: ”Miss Bala” is a sure misfire and it blatantly misses every shot that it takes. Coming off from a pretty impactful predecessor, what we get here is the typical and generic Hollywood reboot: A rushed storyline with a predictable plot further exacerbated by the admittedly decent set pieces not doing much to further drive along a compelling story. No real memorable characters, a character pairing that wouldn’t work in a snowballs chance in hell in the dead of summer, a runtime that feels longer than the specified time that was given and an EXTREMELY lackluster attempt at glorified women empowerment that only ends up making Gina Rodriguez more of a damsel in distress than an genuine badass.

The only good things about this movie is that every once in a while, it does its job at being a thriller movie, giving off good moments of tension and insecurity, there are very few twists that actually pay off in favor of the direction of the storyline minus that stupid last minute twist and Gina Rodriguez is by far and large the only charismatic bright spot in this entire movie. She didn’t give it the performance it needed much less the one that it deserved but decent acting aside, there was absolutely nothing she or any of the other actors can do.

Nothing crosses the line towards being offensively horrendous or downright cringeworthy though. On its own, it’s just bland. And like I’ve said countless times before, sometimes being bland is worse than sucking.
