  • WHAT I LIKED: 'Relay,' is a perfectly paranoid thriller about the lengths that corporations will go to to cover up their dirty deeds.

Riz Ahmed's Ash acts as a secret third party to negotiate between whistleblowers and their employers, returning the information in exchange for companies ceasing their harassment. Lily James' Sarah is his latest client, and she wants to go back to her normal life after being followed for running off with secrets about the agricultural group she worked for. The negotiations involve lots of tense phone calls using the untraceable and confidential "relay service," for the deaf, and cat and mouse type sequences in which the team following Sarah also try to track down Ash.

It's tense stuff not only because director David Mackenzie does such a great job constructing everything, but also because Justin Piasceki's script and the two central performances provide enough meat to the bones of these characters to make you properly care about them and their developing relationship.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: The final act twist is a little glib and trite.

VERDICT: 'Relay,' is a very well directed and brilliantly character driven conspiracy thriller.
