  • The Descent: Part 2 somehow makes its predecessor look like a horror masterpiece. What happened here!? So for some reason, we have ourselves a sequel. Did we need one? No, not at all. But here we are. Sarah escaped the caves of doom, and is found by the local police force...only for her to go back into the hellish caverns! Wait what!? The police actually wanted her to go back in!? After the clear emotional distress that she was in? Sorry, no. That's just stupid. The reasoning behind this is because she apparently knows these uncharted caves, y'know...you go to a place once and suddenly you're an expert. So they attempt to find her friends who were savagely mutilated from the first film. This plays out exactly the same as before, the plot structure is identical. People go in, caves collapse, creepy Falmer from Elder Scrolls (I refuse to call them "crawlers") kill and one human escapes. Everything is predictable. I guessed the whole plot within the first 10 minutes. Expendable cast is expendable. Fake blood is fake. Urghhhh I wasn't impressed by this to be honest. However, despite the absolutely ridiculously absurdly obvious flaws...there are some positives to take away. I appreciated the continuity. The return of cast members were admirable, even if they were there to play dead. The change of director was not noticeable, I felt Harris' imitation of Marshall was decent. The atmosphere felt ominous and many of the gorier moments were authentic and well executed. The jump scares were pointless, in fact all of them were predictable once again. The lighting was less effective, the caves weren't even dark at all. The sense of claustrophobia was completely omitted and don't get me started on the ending. Abysmal. This chapter was pointless, absolutely pointless. I took nothing away from this and unfortunately was a waste of my time. It captured the essence of its predecessor well but refused the opportunity to progress on that. Technically good on the low budget...but the plot ruined it completely.
