I can’t compare this to the original since again, I never saw it but from a movie going standpoint, “Pet Sematary (2019)” offered what I expected from a Stephen King movie but even as a reboot of a movie that I haven’t seen and a book I haven’t read, there’s no resurrection, no revival, no resuscitations to be had with this one and rightfully so. The acting and characters for the most part go hand and hand with the exception of Jason Clarke, character expansion in most of the characters can be shown as none of them stay as static as possible, tight tension with nerve shaking horrific imagery live up to the thriller and horror aspect of this movie but it’s difficultly in show vs tell drags the first and second act to motonty amidst a semi-decent payoff to a straightforward story. There’s an obvious show vs tell dynamic I sensed here in the beginning that felt more like it was talking down to its audience while the other questions about life after death was explored but not enough to where I was satisfied.

I just felt diminished watching this. The last thing you want when making a reboot is to
repeat more or less the same unless that’s what worked before. A good chunk of the movies changes didn’t necessarily bother me except for that ending and the frequent number of jump-scares failed to engage me more than the thriller aspects of the film did.

At the end of the day, it offered me nothing less and nothing more from a typical reboot. Those who felt a soft spot for the original might or might not be on board with the changes here even though, in my defense, the changes brought more depth to some characters and particularly the story.
