  • WHAT I LIKED: Well I think it's safe to say Garfield deserved that nomination, as this guy delivers one heck of a performance as this extremely admirable hero. Hacksaw Ridge is also a film that achieves technically in many ways too - with excellent cinematography and a good score that portray the brutality of war rather well, which is only aided by a very inspiring true story indeed.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Wouldn't it have been more engaging to see an interrogation of these character's blind patriot-isms, as opposed to the out-right celebration we get here? Indeed Mel never really delves deeper into the ideals he explores, and consequently I never truly cared. It would seem in the end, this great story is more of a mask for his morbid fascination with gore and 'good old fashioned American heroism,' and that sadly left me feeling little impact or emotion at all.
VERDICT: Hacksaw Ridge is a well made film for sure; it's just a shame it fails to get to the bottom of the real hows and whys to build a thing that makes you properly care. This story surely deserves that more than any.
