Anybody remember The Hurricane Heist, a film directed by Rob Cohen involving a highly unrealistic and wacky premise about people robbing a bank in the middle of a Category Five Hurricane with an extreme tendency to go over the top without much thought put into the presentation or execution? That’s essentially what “Money Plane” is supposed to be: only it doesn’t have the same campiness or wackiness in comparison to make the experience worthwhile. This is my first time seeing Edge in an acting role since 2012’s Bending The Rules and honestly, I don’t know what to think. He does a good job for what he’s given and he seems to be aware of the wackiness this premise entails (same goes for the rest of the actors and actresses involved), there’s an occasional gag or two that would get a chuckle out of me and I can’t really fault the attempt at worldbuilding or the twists that followed after that. But that doesn’t make the films problems any less obvious: The characters are all stereotypes, the score reeks of generic manipulative action-itis, songs are stock, action sequences really aren’t that interesting (plus they cause the camera to violently jerk about every few seconds a gunshot goes off) and the biggest problem comes down to the film not knowing what it wants to be or even how to go about it. It starts as a serious heist film and flip-flops between campy action flick and high-tech thriller the further it progresses, struggling to find its identity and switching things up too much just to maintain that balance and it never finds it. Need I mention the lack of thrills or something to care for really droned on me.

While it doesn’t strike as the entire antithesis of big dumb action films as its intentions on being the most self-consciously dopey movie it can be is appreciated, the bloody movie is nowhere near as fun as I had hoped. I wasn’t expecting the plot to be realistic in any way, shape of form but suspension of disbelief can only go so far and even as an unhealthy comparison to Hurricane Heist, it was next to impossible for me to suspend my disbelief far enough for an idea this stupid and this dumb.
