I’m not gonna bank on a film series or even a sequel just yet but “Brightburn”, all things considered, would be the ideal place to further expand upon if given the chance. It also further drives home the point that SONY can occasionally create some diamond in the rough when some more significantly talented people are involved.

The very concept of this movie always had potential considering it worked well in other media, specifically comics like Red Son and Injustice. But the difference here as opposed to them is they had a story to back up the premise with both believability as well as giving us more of a reason to interact with their world or universe. This film did leave me disappointed with what it had for a story or the lack thereof......however, I can understand that. It sort of works in the same way of the John Wick movies: the story is lacking and the narrative is weak but the mere concept and premise is so ridiculously cartoonish yet stretched out as realistically as possible that the execution is very intuitive. Acting is a definite plus, the two main characters dynamic with each other is very concrete, very believable, the horror aspect, while predictable, works for a film of this grandeur and the kills are very brutal, this living up to its R rating.

Of course the lack of a story or narrative squanders the already tight premise from achieving its full potential and the acting from Jackson Dunn doesn’t really improve until we get close to the end and it doesn’t help that there’s no motivation.

But I definitely enjoyed this about as much as I thought I would offering what could be the first of many what-if twisted superhero origin stories.
