  • REVISED REVIEW: Let me start off by saying I loved the rebooted game that this was adapted from. 'Tomb Raider' essentially rejuvenated a series that was rapidly becoming fossilised. It's unfortunate that this adaptation did not produce the same results, but that's not to say it's bad. There are many aspects that are replicated directly from the game and gave me that tingling sensation of delicious nostalgia. Lara climbing through the wreckage of a plane precariously positioned on the edge of a waterfall. The mythology behind Queen Himiko. That gorgeous slow motion leap from a sinking ship. Also the adequate amount of actual tomb raiding. It's just frustrating that the first half of the film consists of cycling through London, mixed martial arts, exposition and a barrage of daddy issues. I understand that this is a reboot, and many have not played the game or have acknowledged the background of such an icon. But this way of storytelling is so derivative and basic that all it does is prolong your thirst for adventure. Vikander is an excellent choice for a younger Lara, capturing her innocence and how she becomes the famed archaeologist. There was one plot point regarding her father that absolutely irked me, an unwanted change from its source material. But for a video game adaptation, this is one of the strongest. And whilst I have an underlying love for Jolie's original interpretation, this is still pretty damn solid.
