  • Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is my biggest guilty pleasure. I have seen thousands of movies and this is the one that I shouldn't love...but I do so so so much. Some films can be though-provoking, others can be informational...and then you have those that are just god damn entertaining. Tomb Raider falls into that category. Now bear with me, I watched this hundreds of times as a child so there is a sense of nostalgia for me. This made Angelina Jolie's career, this transformed her from an actress into a movie star and to me she is the perfect choice for Lara Croft. She has the look, the badass-ery and even did alright with the British accent. The directing is pretty standard, the story is predictable and Daniel Craig's American accent is...well...mediocre at best. The film is ludicrous, ridiculous...completely illogical and do you know what? It works. It shouldn't, but it does. Lara bungee jumping in her mansion whilst stabbing bad guys. Lara training against a robot. Lara pitted against living stone statues in Cambodia. Lara sliding on ice with huskies...with just her shoes. Lara knocking a bad guy out...with her motorcycle. Lara just being Lara flipping Croft! Urghhhh I love it and I shouldn't. Every aspect of my critical mind should find this completely mediocre. It's just too good. Heck even Jolie's father Jon Voight plays her father in this and there are some touching moments. The script is full of great one liners and plenty of opportunities for Noah Taylor to shout "bugger!" (drinking game alert!). You may all disagree with me, and I wouldn't argue with you. This is one of the rare cases where I actually rate this film because of its ridiculousness and memorable scenes. You may consider my thoughts biased, but hey it is my opinion and I defy anyone to watch this and not say it was a good time!
