  • Hunt for the Wilderpeople is warm, hearty and just damn feel-good. Indie films are hit or miss for me, fortunately this is a massive hit. It's not everyday you find a film that is technically well presented and emotionally captivating. Sam Neill's best performance by far and I really warmed to Julian Dennison as the troublemaking orphan. Taika Waititi is quite the talent as director, using clean long landscape shots and some nice close ups. Really liked the 360 degree rotating camera work in one scene. I thought the characters were great, our two main leads were learning and bouncing well off each other but the child welfare officer was absolutely hilarious. I even "shazamed" some of the songs from the soundtrack, really elevated the indie flavour of the film. My only criticism is that some characters felt shoe-horned, like psycho Sam, just so that the humour is present...I don't think it needed it. Definitely one of the highlights of 2016, glad I watched it!
