  • Insidious: The Last Key...well, enough is enough. I do have some alternate names for this chapter though! Insidious: The Last of the Jump Scares. Insidious: The Last Time You'll Hear Anything Again. Insidious: The Last Chance That This Franchise Can Survive. I mean the first horror film of the year is traditionally abysmal, so much to my surprise this was actually better than the typical entry. Saying that though, this was blander than Elise going into 'The Further'. A personal case where Elise is called back to revisit her old childhood home where she first honed her skills of contacting the supernatural. She confronts a demonic entity that seems obsessed with keys, so much so that its finger tips are actually keys. This chapter is the pure definition of a quick cash grab. Y'all put on your mathematical hats now...sequel to successful franchise plus low budget equals money money money. That's all this is, and it shows in the quality. An incredibly forced story to try and tie in with previous instalments. Whilst I appreciate the continuity, what's the point? It just adds to a convoluted plot. Fortunately we follow Lin Shaye's Elise who is the most interesting character in the series. Shaye's performance was excellent as she battles her way through an underwhelming basic script. I unintentionally laughed more at lines she said, like wearing a lost whistle and gleefully uttering "safe now!". Cracked me right up. The two sidekicks to the psychic do provide characterisation and an overabundance of humour that consequently extinguishes the terror. Anyone who says this is scary is just wrong. I'm sorry, but you're incorrect. All this consisted of was ridiculous loud noises and a shadow or demon appearing in the background. Volume increased from zero to one hundred in the space of a second. That does not make a good horror film. One effective scene involving suitcases, but was ruined by an unnecessary jump scare. Some inventive camera placements but the direction was pretty average. It's just a shame that this series continues in a downward spiral. Stop making them!
