    Good lord.

I saw this in IMAX and I was shaking in my seat. This is simply the most intense cinematic experience I've ever had. Yes, IMAX played a huge part in this with its earth-splitting audio and gargantuan image, and I can't recommend seeing it this way enough, but ultimately it was the sheer technical brilliance of Dunkirk that had me quivering.

This is a big contender for the top spot in Nolan's repertoire, butting heads with The Prestige and Memento. I'd have to think about it, but this seems to me like it might be his finest work yet. The intensity of Dunkirk doesn't drop for a second, it's 2 hours of pure, relentless cinematic wonder. This consistency is largely due to the non-linear cross cutting Nolan employs, which keeps the tension steady the whole time

However, huge credit is due to Hans Zimmer here. This film wouldn't have been half as good if it weren't for him pulling out all the stops. This is by far his best score to date, as well as his most unique. At the beginning, a clock begins to tick, and it doesn't stop until the very last minutes of the film. That, combined with the use of sirens, engines, huge bass sounds and the ever rising phenomenon called the Shepherd tone, creates an atmosphere which will make your hair stand up.

I must address an issue some people have with Dunkirk. I have heard complaints that the characters are barely developed, and whilst I agree, I would argue this is completely intentional and works in the film's favour. This isn't the story of Harry Styles or Tom Hardy, it's the story of the horrific experience that Dunkirk was, and these people are nothing but vessels through which we can learn and experience the events for ourselves. They provide a cohesive narrative and they act to their fullest ability. That is enough.

This review is already too long, so I'll just say that this film is damn near perfect to me, every single part of it.

    See it IMAX seriously.
