  • Before I begin this review, I would like to make clear that I'm 100% anti-minion. Any association or campaigning/marketing strategies used to gain popularity by the little yellow diablos deeply disgusts me and should be outlawed. Without further ado, Despicable Me 3. ------ I had no intention to see this movie. The first two were fine, and then they made Minions (for some reason) which was crap, and then I tried to further myself from the franchise. However, some smaller children requested this film, and I was not going to root against a free ride to the theater, so I came along. This movie really isn't all that terrible in theory. If it was standalone I would be kind of impressed- It's just time for the series to fade and the minions to greet a slow, painful demise. Let's just summarize what's going on: Gru and Lucy are newlyweds and co workers of the anti villain league. A former child star named Bratt, from the show Evil Bratt (I know right), who's catchphrase is "I've been a bad boy," (wtf this movie is for kids, Illumination) is washed out and living a life in villainy. They fail to catch him, they're fired by a new boss voiced by Jenny Slate. Then some of his minions start a rebellion. Then Gru finds out he has a long lost brother named Dru. Also his dad was a successful villain. Meanwhile Lucy struggles with Motherhood, similar to Grus problem in the second film. Also Agnes wants to find a unicorn. Also Margo accidentally said she'd be engaged to some kid in a foreign country. I'm probably forgetting something. The point is, A LOT IS GOING ON IN THIS MOVIE- which is its downfall, because you can't win em all. Too many ex machinas and familiar storylines. Too many minions (RIP). However I did find the new character, Dru, pretty sweet so I'll give it a little leeway for that. Despicable Me 3 still has the heart of its predecessors but a lot less charm and wit. Please, Illumination, down with the franchise.
