This is the Wolverine movie we have all been waiting for. The film begins as sort of a slow burn with a pace that fluctuates between break-neck action and a reserved family dinner. It may seem inconsistent to some yet, overall emotional payoff shows it is deliberate. When it was initially announced that Logan was to be rated "R" I was a bit worried but, after seeing the film, my worries were unfounded. This film needed to be rated "R". The freedom of an "R" rating allowed Jackman to give us his best and most powerful performance as Logan. We finally got to see the full rage of Logan, the likes we haven't seen since X2, at full power. The ensuing violence didn't feel gratuitous and served the full measure of the story. The action sequences themselves could possibly be the best-executed action scenes EVER in a comic-book movie. Everything about this film felt natural and right, even Sir Patrick Stewart dropping "F-bombs" didn't feel forced. Stewart's performance was so good it was heartbreaking to see the greatest mind in the X-Men universe in such state. There were multiple scenes involving Logan and Xavier that brought me to tears.

With as much praise that has to be given to Jackman and Stewart, I have to give just as much to Dafne Keen. She doesn't speak until almost two-thirds of the way through the films 2 hr 15 min run time. Yet, somehow she is able to communicate and connect with the audience with only looks and primal screams. For someone so young to be able to deliver such a raw and visceral performance is astonishing.

Although Boyd Holbrook was a standout as Donald Pierce I just wanted more from the villains of the film. They essentially serve as MacGuffins but, this was necessary to focus on Logan's journey throughout the films. This was the only real issue I had with the film.

This film was my most anticipated comic-book film of 2017 and is a perfect send off for Jackman and Stewart as Logan and Xavier. With a story that prioritized characters over the comic-book flash, it stands apart from other X-Men films. The film elevates the comic-book movie genre and shows us how to make a film gritty without having to make it dark. Logan is not just a great comic-book movie it is a great movie...PERIOD. This film will undoubtedly be on my "Top 10" list at the end of the year
