There are only two small flaws in the film. The first is somewhat unavoidable with biopics. The drama at the focus for each of these women emanates from their careers, but in order for the audience to connect to them, the career friction has to be balanced by personal connection. The problem is that the exploration of their personal lives feels extraneous. It doesn't serve the story in any way other than to make the main characters not seem like complete workaholics. The second issue I had was Jim Parsons, he didn't matter at all in the film. His character could have been played by anyone. It was a waste of such a good actor. Now on to the positives. Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer both deliver in force with quality performances we've come to expect. But, by far the star of the film was Janelle Monáe. The moment she talks in any scene you are behind her and you believe her. Henson and Monáe both had standout Oscar moments and would bet money both receive nominations.

Overall Hidden Figures is a good film. with solid performances from the entire cast and a breakout performance from Janelle Monáe. This was a necessary film. This story needed to be told. Some might be put off by the title but once you've seen the film you'll understand how it encompasses the full story of these amazing women.
