  • Directed by Shane Black, "The Nice Guys" captures the world of crime during 70s Los Angeles. It is about a miserable detective, Holland March (Gosling) who works with a hired enforcer, Jackson Healy (Crowe) to investigate the disappearance of a girl named Amelia and the death of a famous porn star. Along their way, they realize that the simple case turns out to be the crime of the century.

The Nice Guys takes an old-fashioned yet original style of noir into a comedy-crime that features everything you would love to see on the 70s. It perfectly captures and realizes the setting of the film, incorporated with smart one-liners and witty dialogue. Gosling and Crowe also have convincing chemistry and Angourie Rice's acting skill is something to look out for.

Black really does a good job in writing an original screenplay and directing a well-executed film. However, the laughs go back-and-forth and the jokes are occasionally funny, but never in loose.

VERDICT: Black's retro-noir elements successfully remind us the filmmaking styles of classic crime movies, and works as a treat.
