I'm not going to beat around the hedge maze, Mike Flanagan is definitely one to watch.
Probably my favourite director working in Horror today (sorry James Wan) I am yet to see a Flanagan flick that doesn't satisfy me. He is obviously well and truely trusted by one of the greatest horror writers of all time after the successful adaptation of Gerald's game on Netflix, a film which has been said by many to be the truest film adaptation of a Stephen King book to date. Unfortunately a story so true to the book was not possible for Flanagan when creating Doctor sleep for the big screen, mostly down to the fact that this adaptation would also be serving as a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, which notoriously disrespected kings source material which ultimately gave the film an entirely different ending than the book. The way that Flanagan takes both sources and molds them together (kings story and Kubrick's sense of space and directing style) to create an ending which will satisfy the original readers of The Shining and in ways put Kubrick's ignorance towards the source material to rights is to me, kind of genius! Also the performances are all top notch, namely from the leads of Ewan Mcgragor and Rebecca Ferguson who I think is absolutely perfect in the role of Rose the Hat.
All in all another beautifully helmed picture from Mike Flanagan who continues to impress the horror world.
