This film is a bit of a mess and while I didn't enjoy it I will say it's better than the last one. The only saving grace for this film, as with all of the films since the first, is the visuals. The level of detail given to the Transformers and their transformations are stunning. Even, the opening battle sequence in Medival times was well executed. That's about all the positives I can pull out of this mess of a film.

Now for the negatives. The biggest problem with this film was the script. The moment the characters begin talking it all falls apart. Filled with cheesy and cringeworthy humor that is par for the course with Michael Bay films the script is horrible. The pacing of this film is erratic, jumping between action sequences, exposition, and different time periods on a whim. There were too many storylines trying to be weaved together to have a film with a cohesive plot. Several of the new characters introduced were disposable. Both Isabela Moner and Jerrod Carmichael could have been completely removed from the film with zero impact. These issues combined made the film cluttered and chaotic. Outside of the Transformers, there was no chemistry between any of the characters on screen. The romance between Mark Wahlberg and Laura Haddock felt forced and unnatural. My last two negatives are small in comparison but they both were startling to me. There are several moments in the third act of the film in which the visual effects don't hold up. There are also several moments when the aspect ratio changes within a single scene to the point it becomes distracting.

Overall if you're a fan of the Transformers franchise you will probably enjoy this film. With well-executed action sequences and for the most part well executed visual effects but with a dreadful script, erratic pacing, and forgettable characters this film is still and improvement on the last installment in the franchise.
