  • Poltergeist is one of the most famous horror films of all time. Consistently referenced in pop culture and has even had its own remake (which isn't great...). This however, is a great family drama with horror elements. Strictly speaking I wasn't scared, there were creepy moments but when the film focusses on the family dynamic it truly shines. The acting was really good, both Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams were great and had good chemistry. Creepy daughter is creepy though...perfect casting. The effects, although dated, felt authentic and you have to appreciate the craftsmanship. Plenty of memorable scenes and quotes ("They're here!"). The plot was pretty unique for a 1982 release and definitely set a benchmark. But again, would I say this was a horror film? Ehhhh. Don't get me wrong, it's creepy...but it's far more effective as a family drama going through a spectral paranormal experience. Also the typical 80's musical score just didn't assist in the scares, it's a common trait with Spielberg associated movies but it does not work for the horror genre. Poltergeist has aged well, I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was pretty creepy!
