For The Birds slingshots a flocking bunch of aviary meanies in fittingly humorous fashion. Ever been the obtuse outcast that just wanted to join in, but were greeted by a group of selfish beak-faced bullies that just wouldn't let you cling onto the same wire? Yeah, same. Don't worry though, those plucky minions will get their just desserts, in the form of being propelled to the outskirts of the atmosphere with the velocity of a transatlantic Boeing 747. Feathers are lost, it's all fun and games and naturally in the end, you're the one laughing at them. Good times! Eggerston's short is an exercise in visual humour, with no dialogue except for inaudible tweets and guffaws from the lanky bird (apparently a Darwin's Rhea, who knew!). Three minutes, one payoff and ending on the word "Fin" disguised as bird droppings.
There is a distinct lack of variety within the short, which may make this animation less memorable than others, particularly if there's no nostalgic value. And despite the well-produced animation, which hasn't aged a day, there are a few flocking annoyances. The same score playing all the way through, basic editing and elongated talon pecking meant that there was no room for anything else, let alone another big bird! Yet it's well executed, brimming with personality, and is sure to put a smile on your face when the miniature birds are launched into the stratosphere. It's just not 'Geri's Game'...0 member like this review.
