Tom Hanks delivers another great performance. In the handful of scenes, he is in he gives a charismatic performance that makes you trust him as the leader of this conglomerate. That's about all that really works for this film.

The film should have been about 20 minutes longer. The runtime crunch was felt in the pacing of the film. With the story progressing through the first act at breakneck speed then stalling thought the second. The editing was a total mess. There's a scene in a bathroom that was essentially a 3-minute long jump cut. Tom Hanks and John Boyega were both underused. Billed second and third they have a combined screen time of about 15 minutes. Emma Watson's performance gives us a one-note character that you neither care about or hate and, because you have no attachment there was no tension in the film until the third act of the film. This pacing issue causes the film to end without the actual resolution of any conflict.

The film raises important societal questions but with a lackluster script, a predictable plot, and forgettable characters, The Circle, is superficial and falls short of the deep introspective commentary on modern society it was meant to be. It's a classic case of all flash and no substance. This is a movie you can skip and wait until it comes out on the streaming service of your choice.
