John Boyega was great in the lead. He immediately gets you invested in Jake and his chemistry with Cailee Spaeny is one of the highlights of the film. ONe of the other things I really enjoyed about this film was the action sequences. The way the action sequences were composed and directed was perfect. One of my biggest issues with the Transformers franchise is how hectic the action scenes feel in Pacific Rim: Uprising, I was never lost and could always tell what was happening on screen. Another huge positive, and this one was surprising, was that I loved this film in RealD 3D. I'll have to see the film again in 2D before I can say this definitively but I think Pacific Rim: Uprising will feel like a completely different film.

Now as much as I enjoyed the film it wasn't perfect. Most of the problems I have with the film emanated from the script. My biggest issue was that there were way too many one-liners and jokes in the film. Now I understand trying to separate the two tonally but the comedy was overdone and the jokes that could have been cut didn't work. My other big issue was that Charlie Day felt completely wasted. There could have been a very compelling arc for his character but it wasn't taken seriously and dipped into comic relief.

Overall, I enjoyed Pacific Rim: Uprising. The film succeeds as a large-scale action film with well direct action sequences and beautiful effects. John Boyega brings all his natural charisma and proves that he is definitely a leading man. Yet the film feels like its too focused on pushing the franchise and that causes a few balls to be dropped. If you love big action spectacles and gigantic robots fighting monsters this is the film for you. If not I'd catch it on Netflix.
