It’s kind of ironic how I used to enjoy repetition when I was a wee little lad and resent it now as a young adult despite going through the same familiar beats every once in a while. That being said, “Palm Springs” isn’t so much a play-by-play imitation of Groundhog Day but more of a counterpoint to it which leads to a lot of interesting places, all of which are well appreciated given the film doesn’t really re-invent the cycle nor completely retread familiar territory in recompense. Whatever end results are present are gratifyingly satisfying to a fault with the film defiantly explaining the loop scenario well and relishing having fun with itself while not overshadowing the dramatic moments needed to strike an unexpectedly tender and bittersweet chord in its utterly tragic main characters. Sure, the rather fast and sharp editing and cinematography keeps the energetic insanity that the tone carries through scene to scene fresh without causing much of a disturbance and Max Barbakow’s directing mostly succeeds in retreading the done-to-death concept into something fresh but I think it’s safe to assume that this rom-com wouldn’t have won me over as much if it wasn’t for the likable characters and surprising A-plus solid chemistry between Cristin Milloti and Andy Samberg.

Most of that is thanks to a magnetic script that first and foremost expresses how love isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be but that it’s still a relatively powerful emotion to cope around; the two main characters were stuck believing that love couldn’t exist in their hearts given how they were bruised by past experiences in love. It comes with a lot of heavy packaging and when you barricade yourself off from the hurt, this becomes a habit and the habit eventually dissolves into your personality....and believe me, given my current position in a long distance relationship, the struggle is real. There is somebody out there for you; love may be far from a positive experience but hopefully that someone could make your time on this Earth a little less mundane.
