The term normally goes: “I’m not mad. I’m just disappointed.” But after what “Annabelle Comes Home” gave me, I’m more than disappointed, I’m more than mad.....I actually kinda feel insulted. This film continues the dangerous and lethargic trend from the previous installments, trading potential storytelling for cheap jumpscares and monotonous, lifeless exposition for stuff that I hope to God doesn’t happen. This film is severely lacking in scares, barely has any characters or character development, the two main characters of this Conjuring Universe are reduced to mere cameos, the protagonists make predictable, stupid decisions, and while
I appreciate this film for going for a similar approach with a haunted house kind of vibe, the sheer lack of suspense or tension doesn’t help advance the inevitable nor does it live up to its R-rating at all.

Seriously, every single scene after the initial buildup is literally setting up the next jumpscare with an overextended use of squeaky doors, creaky floorboards, reflective mirrors, dark houses or alleyways, troubled protagonists, idiot characters and whatever the hell else they could use with no regards on expanding the story or building any character arcs. This is the seventh film in this franchise, why are you sticking to the same tired out predictable formula and how are you out of ideas already? It’s ridiculous.

You might get a kick out of the haunted house environment and atmosphere they try to give the movie and if you like jumpscares, I have no problem with that. But whenever I go to any movie of any genre, there are five things I want to see: story, characters, progression, surprises and maybe something I need to learn. This film has none of those besides setting up more potential sequels and spin-offs and it’s so damn lethargic. But then again, it’s hard to blame them cause to them, if it’s broke but it makes money, why bother fixing it?

It’s exactly what I said in my La Llorona review: different curse, same bag of tricks.
