As the first great horror movie of 2020, “The Invisible Man” had a lot to prove with very little to show for it (pun intended) but it has definitely proven that what you can’t see can ACTUALLY hurt you. What I thought was gonna be yet another embarrassing misfire for Universal’s line-up of monster movies for their canceled Dark Universe instead slowly evolved into a chilling, tense and wholly unsettling painting of the horrors of the indiscernible; a terrifyingly realistic portrait of domestic abuse and other real-world echoes that I pray to Sue Storm doesn’t go unseen. With outstanding cinematography and editing and a spine-tingling direction to boot, Leigh Whannell also cleverly crafts together a smart and simple story with subsequent character development that doesn’t feel hokey or tacked on or rushed, it is a genuine slow burn with a satisfying payoff with the sound and production design adding to the films bleak but suspenseful buildup, Elisabeth Moss’ lead performance is physically and mentally impressive and it’s focus on domestic abuse was handled in such a way that other films that addressed said issue haven’t. Now some elements of the story did end up being predictable in the last act and some parts of the end left me wondering “Well, where’s the rest of it?” But that’s to be expected; I still found a lot to enjoy here.

Most terrifying element about this film is, once again, this is 2020. We’re not that far off from the future and God knows when something similar to what occurred in this movie might actually become a reality? We might actually be too smart for our own good.
