  • Alien Covenant is a mess. Urghhhh I'm so frustrated with this. It has so many glimpses of excellence and genuine fear, but there are too many issues that I just could not ignore. Without a doubt the strongest attribute is Michael Fassbender giving great performances, he holds the entire film together. The production design is glorious, not too much green screen on the new planet and some of those landscapes shots are gorgeous. The visuals are also great, the Xenomorph has not looked better and the Covenant itself was well designed. The use of practical effects was also noteworthy. Ridley Scott owns this franchise and clearly puts in a lot of effort. Ok, deep breathe. So why why why why why could he not settle on a tone!? You can't start off like Prometheus then all of a sudden turn into Alien! The mystery, the philosophy, the god damn themes it built up in the first half are completely ruined by the second half. The themes themselves felt forced, we get it...it's about creationism. The plot was all over the place and the majority of the crew members were bland and boring. I can't spoil the third act, but it just made the Xenomorph and the whole fear around it just so less menacing that quite frankly may affect my viewings of the earlier instalments of the franchise. I have to judge the film fairly, there are more positives than negatives but I can't help but feel annoyed. Such a disappointment.
