  • The Tourist contains light escapism in a convoluted pedestrian plot. Mainstream short thrillers that do not require much concentration are fine for passing time, and can make for an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately for this star-studded flick, the tonal inconsistencies embedded within a ludicrous yet predictable story can't elevate itself above the rest, thus instantly becoming forgettable. Governmental agencies follow an enigmatic woman, who's beauty captivates all, as she attempts to fool them into believing a civilian is a world-class criminal. The inner and outer luxury of Venice is beautifully captured, with both the residents and architecture exhuming glamour and elegance. Jolie is mesmerisingly stunning as she activates Lara Croft mode for a mismatched British accent (again). Depp is a handsome fellow, with such a rugged poise and sharp smoulder that it would stop any Venetian in their tracks (even if he is doing his Jack Sparrow run across rooftops). The flamboyant score complements the idyllic scenery with such richness that it can only be best described as eating "scampi risotto" in a fine dining restaurant. Beautiful, just beautiful. All that beauty...for nothing. How best to describe this film? Is it a comedy? Thriller? Mystery? Drama? Romance? Perhaps all of the above? There are so many genre strands intertwined together, that the frequent shifts in tone make for a disorientating film. Then the primary focus on Jolie and Depp feels slightly self-indulgent as they hardly act at all, which feels frustrating when Bettany and Dalton deserve better. The mystery behind the plot can be quickly deciphered during the first ten minutes, which makes the final reveal underwhelming. Considering the film relies on this twist, it is therefore deemed as a failure in whatever genre you choose to put this in. This is even without mentioning the one-dimensional characters and non-existent development. So it does provide light escapism amidst a beautiful city, but that's about it. You would be better off touring a different thriller.
