If you’re really willing to let curiosity get the better of you to find whatever scours beyond the depths of “Underwater”, at best, you’ll find a well-directed, somewhat tense, fast-paced and suspenseful film that ranges from mediocre to perfectly average and at worst, you’ll find a confused cornucopia of egregious cliches, unoriginal plot-threads that resemble a carbon copy of films much better and much more scarier than what it tries to be and a lack of meaningful character development in a frustrating, albeit passable adventure, all of which leads to a sci-fi thriller that, while lacking any genuine substance and trying to span out to multiple genres, it somehow manages to succeed at the bare minimum.
On one hand, I can appreciate the fact that they actually went out of their way to make a movie with this low of a budget and still found a way to use that to their advantage because when you’re confined to just one or two locations, it’s gonna force you to get creative and in some situations, they did. And yet, a part of me can’t get over how eerily similar and shallow the entire premise of this is. If the characters were more fleshed out and the story had more bite to it, I might’ve enjoyed this a lot more but on its own, it’s a very passable January movie let alone better than what we’re used to getting.
