  • Dredd might just be the most overlooked superhero film. Oh yes, I do indeed enjoy this film every time. It's a simple premise, the mega cities law enforcement are judges and they are able to sentence criminals and/or execute them if necessary. In this film, Judge Dredd is assessing a rookie on a triple homicide case which soon turns into 200 floors of mayhem. The plot is basic as you can see, however this film is relentless. I loved the style and the bold move of making it 18-rated. This allowed for lots and lots of gore, and there is plenty of it here. I thought Karl Urban was the perfect Judge Dredd, he was able to convey his anger and authority just from his mouth alone (the helmet means you can't see their eyes). His voice was epic, and the scene where he says "I am the law"...ooooh gives me goosebumps. Lena Headey makes a good villain, she looked the part and was both psychopathic and manipulative. Olivia Thirlby was good as well, nothing outstanding but she does have some kick ass moments. The best parts of the film are the "Slo-Mo" scenes which is used as a gimmick for a narcotic in the film...it's bright, vibrant and blends well with the intense action. Dredd's gun has a magnitude of different bullets from incendiaries to armour piercing bullets, which makes for some creative and gory deaths. The difficulty with a basic plot in an action film, is that it does start to lose steam as the film goes on. Judges go to point A, shoot bad guys, point B, shoot more bad guys...rinse and repeat until they get to floor 200. But like I said, the action scenes are creative and enthralling to watch. All of this together makes Dredd a rather overlooked superhero film that I think more people need to check out, so make sure you do!
