  • The Huntsman: Winter's War is the most unnecessary sequel to a film that did not need one. But alas, here we are. This time Snow White is out of the picture and we follow the huntsman as he tries to stop the ice queen from having the mirror that Ravenna had in the first film. Ignoring all of that though, this is all about love and the film definitely hammers that down by using the word "love" in nearly every scene (drinking game alert!). There are some good aspects, like the brilliant costume design. Freya and Ravenna's Royal costumes look delightful. The production design is also high quality, particularly Freya's castle. The visuals were good for the most part, I thought the goblins looked abit off when blended with the human characters. Also, Jessica Chastain and Charlize Theron deliver good performances, although the former's Scottish accent was hit and miss. The problem here is that the story was absolutely unnecessary. The Huntsman was a dull character to begin with, so to have a whole film dedicated to him was just a silly idea. Our characters are pretty much one dimensional, particularly Freya who Emily Blunt portrays and interestingly is one of her weakest performances. I won't blame the actors as we know they can all act, the script just does not allow them to...it's very restraint. It literally consists of: exposition, love, love, fighting, love, exposition, final battle, love. Done, whole movie complete. Ridiculously predictable as well. The final battle just consisted of Ravenna using these tar-like spears, she had much better powers in the first film! Also the dwarven characters were forced and obviously there for comic relief, you could remove them and it would make no difference to the plot. So again, it's another well made movie but absolutely unnecessary and let down by a basic plot and limited script.
