The maybe final outing for this long-running series is conventional, absurd and unnecessarily exaggerated just like it’s predecessors but for “Bad Boys For Life”, the absence of Michael Bay from the directors chair proved to be a blessing in disguise, giving this third installment the chance to actually grow out of the shell the previous films sheltered themselves into. It plays upon the strengths of the previous films while adding some genuine heart to the franchise’s rather tired out/predictable formula and, to give it credit, it actually works. There’s solid action, better directing with a better sense of editing and cinematography with consistency and coherency, the jokes are actually kind of funny this time around, the antagonists are much better, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s performances and chemistry are still electrifying as ever and while there’s still an overwhelming sense of BAYHEM choking the film’s atmosphere with Michael Bay’s influence of choppiness and motion sickness, the quality was never butchered and thus the overall experience wasn’t ruined.
It’s not the most original thing in the world but I look at this third installment as a breath of fresh air. It’s technically different than what we got previously but it’s still a Bad Boys movie at its core. However, I wouldn’t recommend seeing it right after Bad Boys 1 and 2, since given Michael Bay’s influence on the previous flicks, you might find yourself worn out trying to catch up with everything and everyone. This one does earn the rank of being a worthy successor but only hardcore fans of the franchise can get away with seeing all three films back to back. Give it some time to stew and you might just find something special in Bad Boys 3 that the first two didn’t have.
