This film starts off with a bang. The opening scene was one of the most intense and engaging scenes of the year. Dylan O'Brien is able to deliver another performance showing that he has a bright future. The physicality he brought to the screen made the character engaging and sympathetic for the audience to connect with. Michael Keaton gives another solid performance provide a counterbalance to the raw emotion of O'Brien's performance.

Where this movie sort of falls apart is the inconsistent script. Several of the exchanges between Hurley and Kennedy felt stilted and at sometimes even cliche. And while Kitsch did well with the material he was given, this film suffers the way many films that want you to root for the "hero" do. The villain wasn't well developed and his relationship to the other characters wasn't explored and that weakens the momentum of the second half of the film.

But even with these negatives, American Assassin still captured my attention and was an enjoyable and entertaining film. If you enjoyed the films in the Bourne series or are a fan of action films, in general, I think you'll enjoy American Assassin as well.
