I suppose it isn’t a surprise to say “Zombieland: Double Tap”, despite being a direct sequel, feels more or less like a throwback to a simpler time; this blast-from-the-past feel presented in this time machine back to 2009 feels more like a celebration of its own existence than anything terribly fresh. Granted, it worked for its predecessor, but even its predecessor followed a very basic storyline like this film does and at times, it gets too basic to the point where it sort of felt predictable. But while the story (specifically the message) contributed somewhat to its overall vibe, it was everything else around it that made Zombieland so popular and everything that the sequel captured. It doubles down on a lot of character consistency, some bits on the story with finding out home is wherever you take the people you love, the action sequences are over-the-top but nowhere near gratuitous, the jokes are solid and the gags are infectious (I laughed a lot more than I expected) and overall, it captures the energy of the first Zombieland film down to a T: it’s and outlandish and bizarre but surprisingly clever and self-aware and it embraces it.

It’s what fans of the original would want to see and maybe more.

I wish I had more to say on the topic but the film being so ridiculously small in scale prevents me from doing that. After all, the film is made specifically just for entertainment so yeah, whaddya know? SONY didn’t make a crappy sequel for once. I mean, that doesn’t take anything away from whatever bullshit they’ve released this year already but it’s there.
