  • Apart from Star Wars, 1917 was my most anticipated movie of 2019, and not only did it meet my expectations, but managed to also contain one of my favorite musical scores from the past few years. George Mackay and Dean-Charles Chapman star in this World War One thriller about two men who are ordered to call off an attack in order to escape a trap from the Germans. The film is edited to make it look like it was shot in a single take, and that is where the crux of the film’s excellence stems from. 1917 was the most thoroughly engrossing and thrilling film of 2019, fully immersing the audience in this unbearably harrowing journey from start to finish; and as a result, the quieter, more human story beats of the true essence of valor, and the horrors of war on the unassuming young men thrust into it, are brought to the limelight and given the perfect amount of time to stew. 1917 was an intense and necessary film-going experience, at the same time managing to be a vessel for one of the most astounding achievements in modern cinema.
